New study on sand urges for resource governance

A new report by the United Nations Environment Programme, exploring sustainability challenges in sand extraction and consumption, will be launched on Tuesday 7 May, and presented at the International Environment House, by the acting Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme, Joyce Msuya, and the authors.

This report points to more effective management and regulation as demand for sand continues to grow. It comes weeks after the fourth United Nations Environment Assembly adopted a new resolution on mineral resource governance.

Global annual demand for sand and gravel stands at 40-50 billion tonnes, making them the second largest resource extracted and traded by volume after water. The extraction of sand and gravel from the seabed has led to pollution, flooding, the lowering of water aquifers, beach erosion and more frequent droughts. Unsustainable sand extraction also has social consequences, as it can hamper tourism and other livelihoods.

If you plan to attend this event, organized within the framework of the Geneva Environment Network, kindly register online.

New Public Science Lectures by WMO

WMO is launching a new series of public science lectures, which will invite world-leading experts in the fields of weather, climate, water, the environment, and related areas to engage with the WMO community, partner organizations and the interested public. The series is convened by WMO Chief Scientist and Director of Research, Pavel Kabat.

The inaugural lecture will take place at WMO Headquarters in Geneva on 8 May 2019 at 16:00. The lecture will begin with a welcome by WMO Secretary General, Petteri Taalas, WMO Chief Scientist Pavel Kabat, and Chair of the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee, Detlef Stammer. This will be followed by an address by Luis Alfonso de Alba, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the 2019 Climate Summit. Thomas Stocker, Professor of Climate and Environmental Physics at the University of Bern and former Co-chair of Working Group I of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will then present a lecture entitled: "The Climate of Tomorrow: Building the Knowledge for Earth Stewardship."

The lecture will be webcast (available on 8 May 2019, 16:00).

Clean Planet, Healthy People: Sound Management of Chemicals and Waste

Almost 2'000 participants from 187 parties are in Geneva, for the second and last week of the back to back meetings of the Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention, the Rotterdam Convention and the Stockholm Convention. The theme of the meetings is "Clean Planet, Healthy People: Sound Management of Chemicals and Waste".

Last week governments unanimously approved a global ban on the use of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), with exemptions. The uses of PFOA and other fluorinated organic compounds (PFAS) are widespread across many industrial and domestic applications.  Fluorinated firefighting foams are a leading cause of water contamination with toxic chemicals that pollute breast milk and are associated with cancer, endocrine disruption, and harm to fetal development.

Discussions on plastic waste will continue this week.

Various interesting side events are taking place, including the screening of Breathless/Le souffle volé, from filmmaker Daniel Lambo, setting off on a passionate quest to find the truth about the deadly asbestos industry, on Monday 6 May, at 6.30pm.Another important issue on the agenda of the negotiations taking place in Geneva.

Daily summaries are available through the Earth Negotiations Bulletin.
