What's Up in #GENeva this week?

29 April - 5 May 2019

Clean Planet, Healthy People: Sound Management of Chemicals and Waste

Almost 2'000 participants from 187 parties are convening in Geneva this week to attend the fourteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention (BC COP-14), the ninth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Rotterdam Convention (RC COP-9) and the ninth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention (SC COP-9), to be held back to back from 29 April to 10 May 2019. The theme of the meetings is "Clean Planet, Healthy People: Sound Management of Chemicals and Waste".

Various interesting side events are taking place in the margin of this meeting, including an informal discussion on 30 April, at 7pm, at the Bocal Local. Local and international experts will discuss how we can fight back against toxics in our everyday lives.

Daily summaries will be available through the Earth Negotiations Bulletin.

Rethinking Climate Change, Security and Migration

There is an emerging global consensus that climate change will stress the economic, social, and political systems that underpin each nation state, with impacts on food and water supply, increased competition over natural resources, loss of livelihoods, climate-related disasters, migration and displacement. You are cordially invited to attend a lecture with Professor Jon Barnett, to be followed by a discussion with environment, migration and security experts from various organization working on these issues in Geneva, on Tuesday 30 April, at 10am.

Global Resources Outlook 2019

The Global Resources Outlook 2019 report, prepared by the International Resource Panel, and launched in March at the 4th Session of the UN Environment Assembly, will be presented in Geneva on 2 May. The report examines the trends in natural resources and their corresponding consumption patterns since the 1970s to support policymakers in strategic decision-making and transitioning to a sustainable economy.
