What's Up in #GENeva this week?

26 November - 2 December 2018

United Nations Forum on Business and Human Rights

The seventh annual UN Forum on Business and Human Rights starts on Monday 26 November in Geneva. Under the theme “Business respect for human rights - building on what works”, more than 2,500 participants from government, business, community groups and civil society, law firms, investor organizations, UN bodies, national human rights institutions, trade unions, academia and the media, will meet during three days.

Various events will focus on responsibilities of businesses with respect to climate change, and the shifting to renewable energy.

Geneva Celebrates 2018 ‘Alternative Nobel Prize’ Laureates

After Stockholm last Friday, Geneva will celebrate on Monday 26 November the 2018 Laureates of the Right Livelihood Award, widely known as the ‘Alternative Nobel Prize’, and their inspiring solutions to some of the most urgent challenges of our time.

The Right Livelihood Award was established in 1980 to “honour and support courageous people and organisations offering visionary and exemplary solutions to the root causes of global problems”. It has become widely known as the 'Alternative Nobel Prize' and there are now 174 Laureates from 70 countries.

Two of the 2018 Laureates, Yacouba Sawadogo, known as “the man who stopped the desert”, and Tony Rinaudo, known as the “forest maker” will visit the Environment House to discuss the importance of investing in forests.

Preparations for the 2018 Climate Change Conference

Ahead of the UNFCCC COP24 meeting to be held in Katowice, Poland, from 2-14 December 2018, preparatory events have been taking place in Geneva. Numerous experts based in Geneva will join the conference and be very active in presenting their activities and launching new initiatives and reports.

Monday 26 November we are discussing Delivering on the Paris Agreement Promises: Toward the Adoption of Clear Guidelines at the International Environment House.

Addressing Plastic Pollution

In preparation of the second meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-Ended Expert Group on Marine Litter and Microplastics, scheduled for 3-7 December in Geneva, two events mobilizing all stakeholders will be taking place in Geneva on 1st and 2nd December:

Various stakeholders will be discussing the development of a new global convention with a multi-layered governance approach to address plastic pollution. A draft institutional architecture including the pillars of action to form the work of this new body will be discussed at the civil society meeting.

The topic touches different areas such as biodiversity, water, chemicals and waste which are covered by various organizations based in the region. Earlier this year, the High-Level Event on Marine Plastic Litter and Microplastics, organized during the Basel Convention Open-ended Working Group, considered possible further actions to address marine plastic litter and microplastics.
