Making Mercury History

The third meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury, is taking place this week in Geneva. More than one thousand participants – including parties’ representatives, non-parties governments, intergovernmental organizations, UN bodies and NGOs – are confirmed to attend the gathering. Participants will be reviewing progress and challenges regarding the implementation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury in the world. #MakeMercuryHistory

 

Environment @ UN Forum on Business and Human Rights

The UN annual Forum on Business and Human Rights is the global platform for stock-taking and lesson-sharing on efforts to move the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights from paper to practice. The 2019 Forum theme "Time to act: Governments as catalysts for business respect for human rights" brings the focus on the need for all governments to demonstrate progress, commitments and plans in implementing the State duty to protect and strengthening accountability. WTO Committee on Trade and Environment Week

The WTO supports sustainable development and the environment through its specialized committees and bodies. One unique institutional venue is the Committee on Trade and Environment (CTE), meeting this week in Geneva. As a forum for dialogue on trade and the environment, the Committee is an incubator for ideas on how to move the discussion forward. Various side events are taking place in parallel to committee. Emissions Gap Report 2019

The 2019 edition of the Emissions Gap Report will be released on 26 November 2019. The report presents the latest data on the expected gap in 2030 for the 1.5°C and 2°C temperature targets of the Paris Agreement. It considers different scenarios, from no new climate policies since 2005 to full implementation of all national commitments under the Paris Agreement. #EmissionsGap

 

2019 ‘Alternative Nobel Prize’ Laureates

The 2019 Laureates of the Right Livelihood Award, widely known as the ‘Alternative Nobel Prize’, and their inspiring solutions to some of the most urgent challenges of our time, will be celebrated in Geneva on 28 November. In lieu of Greta Thunberg, Professor Susanna Hecht, of the Centre for International Environmental Studies of the Graduate Institute, and Josselin Stone,  Co-Founder and Co-President, Student Association « Lycéens Unis pour Demain », will present and represent the laureate. #RightLivelihoodAward

 

Friday for Future

29 November is the date of the next global climate strike. The mobilization targets the UN climate talks that begins next week. Around the world people will be screaming that climate justice can't wait. In Geneva, the demonstration will leave from Jardin Anglais at 7pm. #FridaysForFuture #climatestrike #ClimateAction

celebrating two decades of the Geneva Environment Network & International Environment House

Special events are taking place this week to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Geneva Environment Network and the International Environment House, with the participation of UNEP Executive Director, Inger Andersen. #GEN20

On Monday 25 November, the PechaKucha Night @ International Environment House will be a fun and entertaining evening with environment-themed stories from Geneva's meltingpot and some high-level guests from abroad. #PechaKuchaGENeva


On Tuesday 26 November, a High-Level Discussion will focus on the role of Geneva in placing environment on the highest political agenda and will be preceded by a reception.
