19 August - 25 August 2019
The Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) are convening in Geneva until 28 August, for the CITES triennial World Wildlife Conference (18th meeting of the Conference of the Parties). The meeting opened last week, expressing deep condolences to Sri Lanka and praising the country's commitment to the Convention.
Governments have submitted 56 new proposals to change the levels of protection that CITES provides for species of wild animals and plants that are in international trade.

As threats to individuals and communities defending their environmental and land rights intensify in many parts of the world, the UN Environment Programme and the UN Human Rights Office have prioritised efforts to promote and protect environmental and human rights with the signing of a new cooperation agreement. Last week, the heads of the two UN bodies formalised a new partnership to protect environmental and human rights.
The two organisations will now work more closely to monitor threats against environmental rights defenders; advocate for better protection; urge more effective accountability for perpetrators of violence and intimidation; develop networks of environmental human rights defenders and promote meaningful and informed participation by rights defenders and civil society in environmental decision-making.
