What's Up in #GENeva this week?

19 November - 25 November 2018

Second Meeting of the conference of the parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury

The second meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury opens on Monday, 19 November 2018 at the International Conference Centre in Geneva, and is scheduled to close on Friday, 23 November 2018.

Expectations for the Meeting
Delegates attending the meeting will consider:

  • procedural matters, including the rules of procedure and financial rules;
  • technical work related to mercury releases to land or water, as well as mercury emissions through open burning of waste;
  • effectiveness evaluation;
  • organizational arrangements for the Secretariat;
  • the operation of the financial mechanism, including the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Convention and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and certain provisions for the Specific International Programme to Support Capacity Building and Technical Assistance; and
  • rules of procedure for the Implementation and Compliance Committee.

Delegates will also address technical work in preparation for the third meeting of the Conference of the Parties, including the development of guidelines on interim storage, the establishment of waste thresholds and the work on guidance on the management of contaminated sites.

Monday 19 November is World Toilet Day

World Toilet Day, celebrated on 19 November, is about taking action to ensure that everyone has a safe toilet by 2030 (SDG 6). This year's theme focuses on nature-based solutions to our sanitation needs, as we must build toilets and sanitation systems that work in harmony with ecosystems.

To celebrate this edition, join the rally, starting at 11am on Place des Nations, aiming at sending a life-saving message to the world about the critical importance of good sanitation and hygiene.

Law for Environmental Sustainability

The UN Environment Management Group Nexus Dialogue, taking place on 19 November, from 1 to 6pm, will identify existing gaps and opportunities for strengthened collaboration among UN entities and other stakeholders to promote legal measures to implement Agenda 2030, with particular focus on its environmental dimension.

During this half day event these entities will discuss how they can collaborate by building on existing successful partnerships and borrowing from good practices in other areas of law.

By exploring these issues through an environmental lens, the Dialogue will encourage the implementation of Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
