Environment House Newsletter

Previous Environment House Newsletters
A round-up of topical essays by the members of the Geneva Environment Network.

Issue 16: The opportunity for change
(05 June 2007) We are at a pivotal moment in history. This century, this decade, this year – is like no other in its importance to the future of human life on Earth. This year the science of climate change became unequivocal: our planet is warming. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has confirmed it.

Issue 15: Basel Convention hosts World Forum on E-wastes
(01 December 2006) The member governments of the Basel Convention on the Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal met at the United Nations Office in Nairobi from 27 November to 1 December to seek solutions to the world’s rising tide of hazardous wastes.

Issue 14: From knowledge to action
(01 June 2006) Since its creation, UNEP has been a catalyst for international action on the environment. We can point to numerous conventions and protocols on environmental issues as evidence of UNEP’s success in this role. But what should we be doing in the next few years to play our part in helping to achieve the Millennium Development Goals?

Issue 13: International Year of Deserts and Desertification
(01 December 2005) The issue of desertification is often obscured by an all-too-common misperception: that it involves a “natural” problem of advancing deserts in faraway developing countries. In reality, of course, desertification is anything but that.

Issue 12: The Roles of Cities in Sustainable Development
(01 June 2005) The increasing importance of cities for the environment makes the “Green Cities” theme of World Environment Day 2005 very timely. The environmental problems of cities in developing countries, and especially megacities, are posing serious health threats to many urban residents.

Issue 11: The International Year for Sport and Physical Education
(01 December 2004) In November 2003, the fifty-eighth session of the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 58/5 entitled “Sport as a means to promote education, health, development and peace”. The resolution proclaimed 2005 as the International Year of Sport and Physical Education.

Issue 10: Invaders of the Geneva basin
(01 May 2004) To celebrate its 100th Anniversary, the Botanical garden and herbarium of Geneva (CJBG) will hold a series of public events, one of which is an exhibition entitled “Envahisseurs!” (Invasive species!).

Issue 9: New Annex for International Environment House
(01 December 2003) Residents and visitors at the International Environment House will have noticed the new building taking shape right next door. Despite its name, Bâtiment Administrative du Balexert, or BAB, this new building has in fact been built as an annex to the House, where space is starting to become scarce.

Issue 8: Conflict and the environment: lessons learned
(01 June 2003) Military conflicts always bring human suffering. But what do we know about their environmental consequences? What risks do they pose to human health and the recovery process? And how can the environment be integrated into reconstruction efforts?

Issue 7: Mountains: Safeguarding our future
(01 June 2002) With more than half of humanity depending on mountains to provide the water it needs to drink, grow food, generate electricity and sustain economic development, IUCN would be disregarding our common future if it did not pay attention to mountains in its work programme.

Issue 6: The health agenda for Johannesburg
(01 January 2002) The Rio conference in 1992 heralded a new approach to dealing with environment and development issues and represented a significant advance in thinking since the Stockholm conference on the human environment held 20 years earlier. Looking back over the past 15 years, and reflecting on the work of the World Commission on Environment and Development, the Rio conference in 1992, and the subsequent work of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD), I see evidence of much progress, as well as many setbacks.

Issue 5: IPCC sounds alarm on climate change
(01 August 2001) When the UN Environment Programme and the World Meteorological Organization launched the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 1988, no one imagined how effective and influential its work would become.

Issue 4: Preparing for Rio+10
(01 January 2001) The review conference in 2002, ten years after the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, offers Governments and others the opportunity to not only review the progress made in the implementation of Agenda 21, but also assess the adequacy of the institutions involved and remove major obstacles for sustainable development.

Issue 3: CITES rules on elephants, whales, turtles
(01 October 2000) The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, whose secretariat is located at the International Environment House, held its 11th conference of the Parties at UNEP’s Nairobi headquarters in April. Since OPs are held only every two-and-a-half years, they are much-anticipated events on the international environment calendar. This year’s meeting was attended by close to 1,400 participants, including around 700 delegates from 145 governments, 250 journalists, and 400 members of 157 non-governmental, UN, and intergovernmental organizations.

Issue 2: Geneva Environment Network gets active
(01 February 2000) The second half of 1999 saw the Geneva Environment Network (GEN) grow from an idea into a reality. This cooperative partnership of over 30 Geneva-area organizations active in environment and sustainable development organized several successful events and strengthened its information resources.

Issue 1: Networking the environment
(01 September 1999) “Synergies” and collaboration”: these new catch-phrases are a response to the growing complexity of global environmental challenges and the institutional arrangements that have evolved for responding to them.
