"The International Environment
House is meant to serve as a facilitator of global networking in the fields
of environment and sustainable development… "
-- Moritz Leuenberger
Swiss Federal Councillor, Federal Department of Transport, Communications and Energy
The International Environment House (IEH) gathers under a common roof a range of United Nations and non-governmental organizations active in the field of environment and sustainable development in the Geneva area.
The House aims to foster synergies and encourage partnerships
between the different organizations, secretariats and environmental institutions
housed in its two buildings, and to raise awareness of the considerable
potential for international environmental collaboration in Geneva.
Resource Centre
A common resource centre and library are located on the ground floor of IEH 1.
Library

The Geneva Environment Network (GEN) Library contains books
and periodicals on chemicals, endangered species, hazardous wastes, climate
change, desertification, human settlements, Agenda 21, and more. Display
shelves in the main area exhibit GEN member publications and direct users
to other organizations’ information resources. An online catalogue allows
users to search the GEN
library via Internet, and a links page highlights other Geneva area
libraries with environmental collections, including their on-line catalogues.
New Acquisitions.
The Library is open to the public on weekdays from 9:00-12:00 and 14:00-17:00. A librarian is available at these times to respond to requests and to assist users.
Cybercafé and Video Viewing

A Cybercafé provides guests with several PC terminals for research and education on environmental issues. Upon request, users may obtain access to official documents stored on the United Nations Official Documents System (ODS).
Facilities also exist for viewing videocassettes, including the GEN's own collection of some 70 environment videos, on topics such as Agenda 21, chemicals, climate change, deforestation, desertification, ecosystems, oceans, hazardous wastes, eco-tourism and freshwater resources. Search the GEN online catalogue.
