IUCN is a unique Union with 1,063 members from some 140 countries,
including 83 states. More than 10,000 internationally recognized scientists and experts from more than 180 countries volunteer their services to its six global commissions. Its 1,000 staff members in offices around the world are working on some 500 projects.
Activities
The Union’s mission is to influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable. The Union focuses its activities in 12 areas:
Biodiversity Policy – species, protected areas and sustainable use concerns together with the social, economic and political dimensions;
Climate Change – forests, wetlands/water, marine and coastal areas, desertification, species, protected areas, social policy, and environmental law;
Economics – encouraging the private sector to conserve biodiversity;
