The 188-member organization provides scientific information on and projections of the state and behaviour of the Earth’s atmosphere, its interaction with the oceans, the climate it produces and the resulting distribution of water resources.
Activities
WMO facilitates international cooperation on the establishment of networks of stations for making meteorological, hydrological and other geophysical observations. It promotes the rapid and free exchange of weather, water and climate data, the standardization of meteorological observations and the uniform publication of observations and statistics. Its activities are centred on the following ten major programmes:
with organizations inside and outside the UN family, including NGOs such as the International Council for Science (ICSU) and regional IGOs. Cooperation with UNEP includes the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer and the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
