Chemicals and Waste Briefing

Roundtable Event

A briefing focusing on the outcomes the fourth session of the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM4), the preparation of the intergovernmental negotiating committee on mercury (INC7) and the outcomes of recent meetings, as well as current and upcoming activities of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions took place on Thursday 26 Novebmer at the International Environment House. An update was also provided on the status of implementation of the Special Programme to support institutional strengthening at the national kevel towards the implementation of the chemicals and waste conventions and SAICM.

ICCM4 took place from 28 September to 2 October 2015, in Geneva. The Conference marked a major milestone as it was the last ICCM taking place before 2020. The Conference amongst other things adopted resolutions on regional and sectoral implementation, addressed emerging policy issues, discussed sound management of chemicals in the context of the sustainable development goals and beyond 2020. ICCM4 featured a high-level segment as well as other special events.

The seventh session of the intergovernmental negotiating committee on mercury (INC7) is scheduled to be held from 10 to 15 March 2016 in Jordan, with regional consultations on 9 March 2016.

Recent meetings by the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions secretariat included the Basel Convention Country Led Initiative (CLI) legal clarity meeting, held from 21 to 22 September 2015 in Geneva, the annual meeting of Basel and Stockholm conventions regional centres, held from 5 to 8 October 2015 in Geneva, the Stockholm Convention eleventh meeting of the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC-11), held from 19 to 23 October 2015 in Rome, and the Rotterdam Convention eleventh meeting of the Chemical Review Committee (CRC-11), held from 26 to 28 October 2015 in Rome.

Discussion

Following questions and remarks from El Salvador, France, and Romania, the Secretariats provided additional information on various topics, including ICCM5 preparations, the Minamata Convention Secretariat hosting, Minamata Convetion COP1 preparations, progress/work of the various secretariats on the 2030 Agenda, SAICM platforms to discuss and engage with stakeholders, Minamata Convention ratification and signature, INC7 participation, conflict dates of some meetings.
